About Us

Virtual Business Solutions Ltd (VBSL) is led by two partners - Gabriela Newman and Steve Nickson, and consultant Matthew Whitbread-Edwards. The rest of the team are consultants who bring a wealth of experience and specialist knowledge that enables VBSL to offer a broad range of services to its clients.

The relationships we have with our clients is different to those of larger firms - they are more personal and our independence means we can focus on doing the right thing for our clients without any commercial distractions.




Gabriela specialises in business valuations as well as management accounting involving business owners and managers looking at operational performance to meet future strategic and operational needs. It is based on information from processes, technologies, suppliers, customers and competitors.

She also specialises in accounting systems and software implementation and support, and is a MYOB and Xero Certified Consultant.

Prior to joining VBSL, Gabriela was an Associate Principal at WHK [now Crowe Horwarth] where for 11 years she was providing accounting and business growth advisory services to many small to medium size businesses. Prior to joining WHK, she gained extensive practical commercial experience through financial control and management roles within the retail, wholesale, hospitality, theatre and film sectors. 

She has a great way of explaining information, without the jargon. Her goal is to help clients achieve a better lifestyle through improving their business and helping them guide it in the right direction.



Steve specialises in helping organisations improve their performance through the analysis of existing problems and development of plans for improvement. 

He provides objective advice, expertise and specialist skills with the aim of creating value, maximising growth or improving the business performance of his clients. 

He provides business valuations, succession planning, change management assistance, technology implementation, strategy development, innovation and growth strategies, mentoring and operational improvement services. 

Prior to joining VBSL, Steve had his own management consultancy and website optimization business. Prior to that he was the chief executive of the Wellington Free Ambulance Service for 10 years. His previous background covers senior management roles as well as owning several businesses in the areas of earthmoving contracting, health and safety, medical book publishing, scuba diving, and outdoor safety. 

He is passionate about quality and gets enjoyment from his relationships with clients. 

Steve is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management, and is a mentor for their mentoring programme.



Matthew is a Chartered Accountant who specializes in taxation, business structuring and financial reporting as well as implementing accounting systems to enable business owners to focus on the key performance indicators to enable them to develop and grow their business.  He also has significant experience in the evaluation of business proposals including preparing budgets and financial projections. He is a Xero certified consultant and is experienced with Rural Cash Manager.

Matthew has a total of 25 years’ experience in accounting with a significant portion of his career being in the primary sector. Prior to joining VBSL Matthew was a client partner at Beker Findlay Allan for eleven years providing accounting, taxation and business advice, had 5 years experience with Sherwin Chan & Walshe (now part of Crowe Horwath) providing accounting and tax solutions to small to medium size business, and 5 years’ experience with Beattie Rickman (now part of PWC) in Hamilton. He focusses on ensuring that the accounting and tax aspects of a client's business is as simple and stress free as possible, as well as providing proactive advice.
